Istanbul: where two continents meet
Istanbul straddles two continents and three empires — a thrilling collision of minarets and markets, ferries and the call to prayer, where Europe and Asia trade places across the Bosphorus. Give it at least three days; it deserves more.
When to go
April–May and September–October bring warm days and thinner crowds. Summer is hot and busy; winter is cool and atmospheric. Ramadan shifts the city’s rhythm — check the dates.
Getting around
Trams and ferries are the key — a rechargeable Istanbulkart covers trams, metro, buses and the Bosphorus ferries. The old city (Sultanahmet) is walkable; cross to the Asian side by ferry for the experience. Traffic is brutal, so skip cars.
🛏️ Where to stay in Istanbul
Sultanahmet lets you wake among the monuments, Beyoğlu/Galata brings nightlife and a modern buzz, and Kadıköy on the Asian side is local and food-obsessed.

Three perfect days
Day 1 — Imperial Sultanahmet
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque (mind prayer times and the dress code), the eerie Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace — two empires’ hearts in one square.
Day 2 — Bazaars & the bridge
The labyrinthine Grand Bazaar and the aromatic Spice Bazaar, then up Galata Tower and across to buzzing İstiklal Street.
Day 3 — The Bosphorus
A ferry cruise between the continents, the opulent Dolmabahçe Palace, and a sunset over the strait with a fish sandwich by the Galata Bridge.
